A-Z Blog Challenge 2016 – Samwise Gamgee
Of all the amazing characters in ‘The Lord of the Rings’, Samwise is one of my favourites. I even prefer him over Frodo and he’s the main character! I may have already said this when I wrote about Gimli, but if you haven’t watched these films yet, I would recommend it. Just make sure you give yourself a few days.
I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched this trilogy. There was a time in my life when I would watch it every weekend, but not the wimpy normal versions – the extended editions. If I had the spare time now, I’d do it all again. I just love these films and the whole story that goes with it. I really need to read the books again!
There is only one way to describe Sam, and that is ‘Brave’. He’s a gardener who just happened to overhear a very secret conversation between Frodo and Gandalf, and then trekked through Middle Earth into the land of Mordor. He could have stayed in The Shire or in the safety of Rivendell with Bilbo, but he chose to stay with Frodo, and do you know why? Because he made a promise to Gandalf never to leave Frodo. One tiny promise.
There are so many moments in this story when Sam could have walked away, but he doesn’t. The longest he is separated from Frodo is when Frodo tells him to “Go home” (This bit. I’m in tears. Every. Time) and even then, he doesn’t leave. He goes back to find his friend. He’s the most loyal fictional character I have ever seen.
Towards the end of ‘The Return of the King’, Sam can see how much his Frodo is suffering and instead of allowing his friend to give up all hope when they are so close to completing their journey, he literally carries Frodo to the end. The mission would not have been completed successfully without Sam. He’s simply a gardener and he turned into one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. Just think about that for a second.

Yes, Sam is a worthy favorite, and I like Book-Sam even better than Movie-Sam. Such a fantastic series, I too need to read and watch it again. One thing I’ve wondered is if the English view LoTR differently than we Americans, in that you’re more familiar with the landscapes that Tolkien wrote about, and perhaps some subtleties of language that we miss. I could talk all day about LoTR. Maybe I WILL read it again!

I can’t remember much about book Sam, so I’ll definitely have to read them again. I’ve never thought about how different cultures view the films, but you may be right. The Shire is essentially the British countryside.
