50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 1

50K50Days - Day 17 - Lauren Mayhew AuthorIt’s day 19 of my writing challenge, as I write this, and I’m glad to say that everything is going well so far.

As you can see from the picture on the left, by Day 17 I was already at 18,376 words. That’s 1,376 words ahead of schedule, so I gave myself the day off on day 18.

I am surprised at how easy I’ve been finding this so far. It took me a whole year of procrastination to get round to writing this book, and now that I’ve got the ball rolling, I don’t know what took me so long. Continue reading “50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 1”

J – Joshua

Joshua's Island - Lauren Mayhew A-Z Blog Challenge 2016A-Z Blog Challenge 2016 – Joshua

Joshua is one of the main characters in the book ‘Joshua’s Island’ written by Patrick Hodges. I wrote a review about this amazng book here.

Joshua is a very strong and mature young boy, who handles his situation in school a lot better than most adults would. In short, he is being bullied and has been completely isolated by the entire school.

The ‘cool’ girl in school, Rhonda, decided one day to single Joshua out and use him as her personal punching bag. Everyone in the school is too scared of Rhonda to make a stand against her and help Joshua, so he removes himself completely from their presence and basically tries to become invisible. Blurb:

Allie Carmichael has always believed life is simple.

You’re born. You live. You die.

She has no cause to believe that equation works differently for her, but there has to be a reason the world treats her like a pariah.

When an unexpected move to Kelleys Island brings Aidan McBrien crashing into her life, Allie is thrown by his reaction. He doesn’t shrink from her touch. He doesn’t stutter or make a quick exit. He smiles and welcomes her into his circle of friends, who aren’t exactly comfortable with Allie, but they seem to get her in a way most people don’t. YAAR Blog Blitz!

I really haven’t said enough about this wonderful group that I am lucky to be a part of. Young Adult Author Rendezvous is definitely worth a look. There are a lot of talented authors in this group and their books are definitely worth a read!

Paws4Thought

Today on Paws 4 Thought I’m happy to host the YA Author Rendezvous blog blitz. YAAR is a group of like-minded authors who have to come together to share and promote YA literature. I am happy to be part of this group.

In this guest post Sarah Wathen, author of the catchpenny series talks about covers and cover art.

A Picture Worth 100,000 Words

SarahWathen_Catchpenny4.jpeg

Woe to the author who has written her brain into knots, strangled her editor, and reworked her novel until she puked…who can’t find the right darn cover art. And if she could, would the perfect cover be worth $100,000 for her 100,000 words? My starving artist friends would say, “Heck, yes!” But many authors can’t afford to shell out even $1,000.

Luckily, plenty authors are also artists, especially in YA Author Rendezvous!

For me, it was a no-brainer, since my words and my artwork flow from…
