Character Inspiration: People You Know

Character Inspiration People You Know - Lauren Mayhew AuthorThis one may seem obvious, but I think it’s worth writing about. You don’t have to copy someone that you know completely, as that may be a bit too obvious if they ever pick your book up, but you can take certain traits from them.

For example, my first book ‘Reality is in a Dream’ has two characters that are exaggerated forms of two of my old school friends. Certain events that take place in the book involving the main character, Liliana, actually took place during my time at school. It’s quite funny, because I once had a reviewer tell me that she thought these character’s actions were not believable, and yet it actually happened to me. 50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 3

As you can see from the picture on the left, I completed my 50,000 words in 50 days challenge! I’m feeling very proud of myself right now, as this book just did not want to be written.

If you’ve followed my previous blogs about writing the Liliana trilogy, you’ll know that I really struggled to write the second book. It took me 18 months – yes that’s right – 18 long, long months. Because of this, I sort of fell out of love with writing this series, and I had no motivation whatsoever to write the third one. With a challenge like this one, I had no choice but to write it.

Obviously, it’s nowhere near finished. It’s probably the worst draft I’ve ever written, but that’s the whole point of doing a challenge like this. It’s quantity, not quality. You put the quality in during draft 2 and the edits! Continue reading “50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 3”

50,000 Words in 50 Days – Writing Book 3

50K50Days - Lauren Mayhew AuthorHappy New Year everyone! May 2017 be a great year for you all. I have many plans for this year, and I’m going to let you know about one of them right now.

Book 3 in the Liliana trilogy has been playing on my mind for a whole year now, and I need to get it finished before I can start on all the other writing projects I’ve got floating round my head. So, my plan for the first 50 days of 2017, is to write 1,000 words per day. Continue reading “50,000 Words in 50 Days – Writing Book 3”

L – Liliana Frye

Liliana Frye - Lauren Mayhew A-Z Blog Challenge 2016A-Z Blog Challenge 2016 – Liliana Frye

OK, I’ll put my hands up, Liliana is my own creation and I couldn’t exactly go through this whole challenge without mentioning at least one of my characters could I? (Just pretend she’s not my creation for a few minutes!) Liliana is the protagonist in ‘Reality is in a Dream‘ and the soon to be released Mourning Memories.

Liliana is 16 – sort of – and living in a very boring world. Her parents are stupidly over-protective and she doesn’t have many friends. Her school life is based very much on my experience at school. Her two friends, Melanie and Carey are over-exaggerations of two people I used to call ‘friends’. The only friend that she can truly rely on is the new kid Justin. Writing Update Again

This whole year I’ve struggled with my writing. I’ve said this a lot (sorry for being repetitive) and I’ve tried loads of different things to get back on track. As I said in my last update, I’ve been quite motivated to write recently and while I’m in that sort of mood, I thought I’d try writing at a different time.

Normally, I write in my lunch break at work. What with advertising ‘Reality is in a Dream‘ and getting distracted by Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, I haven’t really found the time to write. Now I’ve decided to read in my lunch breaks instead. You can catch up on what I’m reading here.

I used to read before I went to bed every night, so now I’m writing. I used to write before I went to bed, but I stopped as soon as I got a job. I don’t know why because that seems to be when my brain is most active and imaginative.

It’s working though, because I’ve written more in the last two weeks than I did in the previous few months. Mourning Memories should be finished in the next few months! Fingers crossed anyway!

Writing Deadline – What Writing Deadline?

I have one question that I seriously need an answer to… How the hell is it August already?

I set myself a writing deadline a few months ago because I was trying to force myself to speed up my writing of book two – Mourning Memories. I’m supposed to have finished writing it by the 31st August. The deadline only seems to have slowed me down because I’m only half way through.

I’ve found it a real struggle to write and advertise my first book, Reality is in a Dream. Not only this, Pinterest has me glued to the computer screen every lunch break! It’s hard to concentrate on writing when funny Harry Potter memes are waiting to be laughed at!

Because of my inability to concentrate on writing Mourning Memories, I’ve decided to delete my deadline from here and pretend I never set it for myself! Some things just can’t be rushed, and writing a book is one of them!

I hope to have the book finished by the end of the year and edited quite quickly after that! I’m really excited about this one and I think that might be part of the reason it’s taking me so long! I really want it to be perfect!

I’ll keep you updated on my progress for book 2 in the Liliana trilogy. Wish me luck!

How Do You Advertise?

I’ve really been struggling to make sales for my book. I know it’s my first book and no-one knows who the hell I am, but I still would have expected a few more than… well… zero!

Here’s the link to my book: Amazon UKAmazon US Have I done something wrong with the listing?

The price of my book was relatively high, so I have changed that to the lowest that Amazon will allow an eBook to go and yet, even with Twitter and Facebook, I still can’t get people to click the link to my book.

I’ve tried Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads paid advertising and yet nothing seems to work.

I decided to opt in for Kindle Select which means that I can put my book up for free for 5 days in a 90 day period. This worked in the sense that I ‘sold’ 30+ copies of my book (which is a tiny amount when you think about it!) but I think most of those people were from a Facebook that I joined recently for YA authors. I’m not complaining, I’m flattered that they wanted to purchase my book, I just would have liked to see my efforts on Twitter make a difference.

I don’t have many followers on Twitter and even less on my Facebook page (click the links if you want to have a look). Most of my twitter followers are fellow authors who all seem to have had ‘Amazon Bestselling Books’.

On a different subject, is it only me that gets annoyed with automatic direct messages from people trying to sell their book/music to you. I’ll look for myself thanks… Forcing links on me is going to make me click them even less!

Back on subject… I’ve looked up websites that will list your book if it has a special promotion. The only problem with them is that your book needs a minimum of 5 reviews, which I don’t have. How can I get reviews if they won’t let me advertise with them? Catch 22 once again…

Do any of you have any tips on how to advertise my book? I’d love to know!
