Liliana Trilogy Cover Reveal

The third and final instalment in the Liliana Trilogy is finally on its way. With the help of the fabulous designer, Rachel Bostwick, I’m so excited to reveal the title and cover of the third book in the trilogy, Eternity Begins.

I had an idea in mind for Eternity Begins, and so I sent the below sketch to Rachel. It’s fair to say, she transformed it into something beautiful!

Character Inspiration: People You Know

Character Inspiration People You Know - Lauren Mayhew AuthorThis one may seem obvious, but I think it’s worth writing about. You don’t have to copy someone that you know completely, as that may be a bit too obvious if they ever pick your book up, but you can take certain traits from them.

For example, my first book ‘Reality is in a Dream’ has two characters that are exaggerated forms of two of my old school friends. Certain events that take place in the book involving the main character, Liliana, actually took place during my time at school. It’s quite funny, because I once had a reviewer tell me that she thought these character’s actions were not believable, and yet it actually happened to me. 50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 3

As you can see from the picture on the left, I completed my 50,000 words in 50 days challenge! I’m feeling very proud of myself right now, as this book just did not want to be written.

If you’ve followed my previous blogs about writing the Liliana trilogy, you’ll know that I really struggled to write the second book. It took me 18 months – yes that’s right – 18 long, long months. Because of this, I sort of fell out of love with writing this series, and I had no motivation whatsoever to write the third one. With a challenge like this one, I had no choice but to write it.

Obviously, it’s nowhere near finished. It’s probably the worst draft I’ve ever written, but that’s the whole point of doing a challenge like this. It’s quantity, not quality. You put the quality in during draft 2 and the edits! Continue reading “50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 3”

50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 2

50K50Days - Day 38 - Lauren Mayhew AuthorSo, it’s day 39 in the challenge I set for myself to write 50,000 words in 50 days, and so far I’m doing really well. There was a point a few days ago where I had no idea what I was going to write next, and I very nearly gave up. However, I pushed through, and here I am on day 39 with 39,160 words written, and I haven’t even done any writing yet today!

I’ve written the final chapter already, though I know a lot of it is going to change when I start on draft 2. Now all I need to write is the battle scene at the end. Continue reading “50,000 Words in 50 Days – Update 2”

L – Liliana Frye

Liliana Frye - Lauren Mayhew A-Z Blog Challenge 2016A-Z Blog Challenge 2016 – Liliana Frye

OK, I’ll put my hands up, Liliana is my own creation and I couldn’t exactly go through this whole challenge without mentioning at least one of my characters could I? (Just pretend she’s not my creation for a few minutes!) Liliana is the protagonist in ‘Reality is in a Dream‘ and the soon to be released Mourning Memories.

Liliana is 16 – sort of – and living in a very boring world. Her parents are stupidly over-protective and she doesn’t have many friends. Her school life is based very much on my experience at school. Her two friends, Melanie and Carey are over-exaggerations of two people I used to call ‘friends’. The only friend that she can truly rely on is the new kid Justin. If My Characters Were Real…

So, in the author group that I’m part of – Young Adult Author Rendezvous – the topic came up about what our characters look like. Sometimes it’s hard to describe your characters’ exact appearances and it’s easier to give a reader an actual image.

Well, here’s mine:Characters

  • Vika Levina looks a lot like Liliana.
  • Sam Claflin has always been my Justin.
  • I’m not entirely sure who the male model is that looks like Samson. If anyone does know his name, please enlighten me!
  • Kit Harrington is definitely Asher. Handsome.
  • Katie McGrath has the perfect hair and look for Duana.

If you would like to put these faces to the characters, my book is available in Paperback and Kindle on Amazon. Links below 😉

USA – Paperback or Kindle

Writing Update Again

This whole year I’ve struggled with my writing. I’ve said this a lot (sorry for being repetitive) and I’ve tried loads of different things to get back on track. As I said in my last update, I’ve been quite motivated to write recently and while I’m in that sort of mood, I thought I’d try writing at a different time.

Normally, I write in my lunch break at work. What with advertising ‘Reality is in a Dream‘ and getting distracted by Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, I haven’t really found the time to write. Now I’ve decided to read in my lunch breaks instead. You can catch up on what I’m reading here.

I used to read before I went to bed every night, so now I’m writing. I used to write before I went to bed, but I stopped as soon as I got a job. I don’t know why because that seems to be when my brain is most active and imaginative.

It’s working though, because I’ve written more in the last two weeks than I did in the previous few months. Mourning Memories should be finished in the next few months! Fingers crossed anyway!

What’s in a Name?

Whenever I start to write something new, I get really excited about choosing names for my characters. The only problem is, I’m VERY picky and it can take me days – literally days – to find a name that fits my characters perfectly.

Usually, when I start writing, my female main character is called Lucy. I have no reason for this, it’s just the name that pops into my head first. I don’t dislike the name, it just always reminds me of the Chronicles of Narnia and I want my characters to stand out for their own reasons.

I’m not one to think a name is cool and then just use it in my book. I like names to have special meanings for my characters, so I put a lot of time and effort into it. Here’s a few from my book ‘Reality is in a Dream‘ and the names that they were called originally!

Liliana used to be called Lucy. Liliana means: Lily, a symbol of beauty and purity.

Samson used to be called Emanuel. Samson means: Bright as the sun. Also, Samson’s power is super strength. I didn’t purposely name him after Samson in The Old Testament!

Justin used to be called Greg. Justin means: Just or true.

Asher means: Blessed or happy.

Duana means: Little dark one.

Howard (Liliana’s father) means: Guardian of the home.

Mina (Liliana’s mother) means: Love or protector.

Carey and Melanie were based on people that I went to school with, so I won’t mention their original names! I once had a reviewer tell me that the characters both felt very unreal and they didn’t understand why Liliana didn’t just ditch them. The simple answer – I didn’t. I stuck with them for the pure reason that I’m very shy when meeting new people. It was easier to stick with them than feel uncomfortable around new people.

Carey’s Irish meaning: Of the dark ones.

Melanie means: Blackness or dark.

Even if no-one else does the research when reading my book, at least I know that there are certain meanings to my character’s names. In book two ‘Mourning Memories’ I have continued to research my names so that they match their character traits for example, Geoffrey – Peaceful ruler.

How many of you research the meanings of your character’s names before you write? Or do you just simply choose a name that you like? It would be interesting to know!
