I’ve Done it Again…

I've Done it Again - Lauren Mayhew AuthorI have definitely done it again… I’ve missed a month of blogging because life got in the way. Bloody life. If you’ve read my last few posts, you’ll be familiar with my theatre group and the fact that I was rehearsing for three different shows at once. I’m extremely happy to say that there’s only one left to rehearse for and it’s going well, ish. We’re supposed to be scripts down by the 14th August and I’ve learnt the first 20 pages. I’ll be fine, that’s what I keep telling myself anyway.

Theatre isn’t the only thing that’s been holding me back though. I went away to France at the end of July, only for two nights, but it was my first trip abroad in 10 years. I also had just over a week in annual leave from work, and blogging just didn’t feel like the right thing to do on my days’ off!  Continue reading

Camberley International Festival – The Fire Stack

The Fire Stack by Brightlight Theatre Company - Guildford Fringe Festival - Lauren Mayhew AuthorSo, the Saturday just gone was our first performance of The Fire Stack since Woking Drama Festival in October 2018. It’s a one act play, with a duration of about 50 minutes (if all goes well), and there are three cast members. 50 minutes sounds like nothing, but when there’s only three of you, it’s a big task.

We were all a little nervous about this performance, as we hadn’t had a lot of time to rehearse for it. Although we were only refreshing the lines, not learning them for the first time, we still struggled in the lead up to the actual performance. If we hadn’t done a couple of line runs at the pub beforehand, the performance would have been terrible.

We weren’t expecting a big audience at all. We were expecting a handful of members from our group and that’s it, but we had an audience of 10 in the end, which wasn’t too bad. Some of them had come from the play reading beforehand and a few others turned up specifically for our performance. My mum and sister included. Continue reading

Mid-year Update – 2018

Brightlight Theatre Company - 5-Year Charity Spectacular - Lauren Mayhew Author

The main reason I’ve been too busy to blog!

Ever since the A-Z Blog Challenge finished, I’ve been a bit slow with the regular blog posts. It’s not because I’ve lost the taste for blogging, I just couldn’t find anything to blog about that you already didn’t know.

The blogging challenge is always so exhausting too, and it’s been nice to take a back seat and not have to worry about how many posts I have scheduled and how many blogs I need to comment on and read. I’m pretty sure this is what happened the last time I participated too. I got into a bit of a slump.

Anyway, there are other things that have been getting in my way. My theatre group would be the main one. Not only am I currently rehearsing for three different shows at once – yes, I did say three – I’m also the Promotions and Publicity Officer for the group, which basically means that I control the social media accounts. Vicky & Co. by John Pibworth – A New Play

Vicky and Co. Cover - John Pibworth - Lauren Mayhew AuthorThis may look like a book review, but it isn’t. Of course, I will be telling you how amazing this play is, but I am completely biased as John is, in fact, a friend of mine. The play is amazing though…

John Pibworth is the set designer for my theatre group, Brightlight Theatre Company. I’ve known him for just over two years now, though we didn’t properly start talking until about a year ago when he found out about my books. I’ve heard that he’s a fantastic actor, though since I’ve been a part of the group, we’ve not managed to entice him onto the stage. Maybe if we perform his play, we might be able to get him back for one final time.

I’m not sure how long ago he wrote Vicky & Co.. It was about a year ago that he asked if I could help him make it available to the general public and I was more than happy to help, though it was delayed a lot because of my commitments within Brightlight. In the end, John’s sister offered to help by typing the play up onto Word so that I could then take over with the formatting. Continue reading

A Doll’s House – Opening Night

A Doll's House Poster - Brightlight Theatre Company - Lauren Mayhew AuthorFor those of you that may be new to my blog, welcome! For those of you who’ve been here for a while, here’s a quick update all about my experience directing a play. I’ve been with my theatre group for two years now, and they have been the best two years ever! At the very end of last year, I was tasked with directing a play, but not just any play, Henrik Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’.

Brightlight Theatre Company usually work with comedies or murder mysteries, so ‘A Doll’s House’ was the first classic drama that we’ve done. It made us all a little nervous, as our audience usually expect to come along and have a laugh, not to watch a drama about a family set in the 1800’s. Regardless of this fact, the audience absolutely loved our opening show on Saturday! Continue reading

A Month Full of Drama

A Month Full of Drama - The 39 Steps - Lauren Mayhew AuthorSo, other than the new job, and the release of ‘Eternity Begins’, I’ve got other excuses for being so terrible at updating my blog. The main reason, is my Amateur Dramatics group. I’ve been a part of Brightlight Theatre Company since March 2016, and I’ve loved every minute of it!

From April this year, until now, I have been part of three different productions within the group, and it has pretty much taken up all of my time. In April I found out that I got the part of Anabella Schmidt in ‘The 39 Steps’. Even though it was a small part, taking up only the first 10 minutes of the play itself, it was a massive challenge, as I had to try and perfect a German accent. Everyone says I did a good job at it, but I’m still not sure. I took my camera with me for the dress rehearsal, and I managed to snap a few good ones, with the help of my friend Sarah whilst I was on stage. We performed this at the end of September.
