Learning to Play the Flute

Learning to Play the Flute - Lauren Mayhew AuthorI’ve decided I’m going to learn to play the flute. This may seem like it’s come out of nowhere, but I’ve always loved the sound of the flute and thought it would be quite nice if I could play it myself. I’ve placed a bid for one on eBay, second hand, and I so hope I win the item. I’ll just have to keep trying if I don’t win.

I did play the violin when I was a kid. I still have it at home, but the E string is missing, so it can’t be played at the moment. It’s also one size too small for me, so it would be a bit awkward to play anyway. I’m hoping that I’ll pick the flute up as easily as I did the violin. Especially the reading music part. I’m a bit rusty, but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it again. If ten-year-old me could read sheet music, then I’m sure I can now. I hope.

It’s going to take some time to get to the sheet music stage, the sort of music I want to play anyway. I have visions of playing songs from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack or Harry Potter. I definitely have Hedwig’s Theme in one of my old violin books. I should probably master Happy Birthday first though.

I also love the sound of the saxophone but thought that might be a bit too much to learn. Not only are they very, very expensive, they’re also quite loud. I’m not sure how my mum (or neighbours) would feel if I tried to learn the saxophone. Maybe that’s one for the future, especially if the flute learning goes well.

It could just be one of those things that I do on a whim. I might get bored after a few months, though I hope I don’t. We’ll see how it goes. I am still very busy at the moment with my theatre group and work, so it might take a back seat for a while. I am so excited to get stuck in though. I’ll let you know how it goes and I might even make a video for you to watch me crash and burn!

Until the next time,
Lauren x
