A-Z Blog Challenge 2016 – Arthur Pendragon
I started re-watching the BBC series of Merlin a few months ago because I absolutely loved it when it first aired. I finished series 4 a few weeks ago and I’m mentally preparing myself for series 5. That ending… I don’t even like to think about it!
Anyway, one of my favourite characters from Merlin, apart from Merlin himself, is Arthur Pendragon. And it’s not just because he’s played by the beautiful Bradley James.
At first Arthur is quite arrogant, but he’s a spoiled Prince with a tyrant father, so it’s to be expected. But soon he starts to realise that his father may not be someone who he should necessarily look up to and he forms his own opinions about magic and the Camelot that he would like to create.
He turns into a bit of a softie who really just wants to protect his friends and the people in his kingdom. I especially love his friendship with Merlin, his man servant. He shouldn’t even think of Merlin as a friend or an equal and yet he begins to value Merlin’s opinions and advice above all others.
His arrogance disappears as the series’ progress and we see more of his insecurities which make him more human and easier to relate to. He simply turns into the best sort of King – always putting the safety of his people first regardless of the impact it may have on him.
It’s just a shame that series 5 ended the way it did, because I would love to watch so much more!

Bring Merlin back!

Sounds like a great series. I love it when there’s a steady progression of character.

You really should watch it! If you’ve got Netflix, I think it’s on there.

Bradley James made a dreamy Arthur… It was so sad when the series ended. They should really have stopped using the old folklore and stories to predict the ending and just wrote their own – we could still be watching it now. Good luck with the rest of the challenge.

I know what you mean. They adapted so many other parts of the story, but they chose to end it like that. I would happily be watching it still!

I haven’t watched any of the show, but Arthur sounds like a really interesting characterization

At first he’s like the usual ‘handsome’ Prince character, but as the show continues he becomes very lovable.

I refuse to believe Merlin ended the way it did – it’s all an illusion, Merlin and Arthur are still running around having a wonderful time. Anything else is unacceptable 😉
